Hunter e36 • Water Systems9.3 Pickups and StrainersThere are various pickups and strainers installedaboard your boat. Here we will discuss the pick-upsand strainers associated with the water systems.9.3.1 Pick-upsPick-ups, or through hulls are placed in various locationsin the hull of your boat. The intakes usually have a ball typevalve which controls the flow of raw sea water to the specificcomponent, or system associated with the pick-up.! CAUTION !It is very important that you ensure that the intakevalve is open before using a raw water supplied system.Failure to do so could damage or break down asystem or component.StrainerValvePick-up9.3.2 StrainersImage showingthe intake valveand the strainerfor the A/C system.Note theball type valves. When the handleparallel to thesupply line thenit is in the openposition.Figure 9.3Your boat is equipped with strainers that strain the rawwater taken in the thru hulls or pickups for objects thatcould damage the impeller or pump equipment. Strainersare equipped with a screen or a filter inside that collectobjects taken in. They must be cleaned as part of routinemaintenance. To clean a strainer, first, make sure that the supply valveis in the Off or closed position. Failure to close the intakeor seacock could result in a flooded boat. Next, removethe “collector” or glass encasement that houses thescreen. Remove any objects collected inside and washthe screen.9.3.3 A/C Pickup and Strainer (Air ConditioningOption)At the end of this section, you will find an illustration of theA/C cooling water arrangement. It is important to alwaysensure that the intake valve (see mechanical arrangementin the Boating Safety Chapter, as well) is alwaysopen before using the A/C System. If you purchased your boat with the air conditioningoption, you will find the documentation for the operationof this system in the owner’s packet of the manufacturer’sowner’s/operator’s manuals.9.3.4 Generator Cooling Pickup and Strainer(Generator Option)The generator is an engine and, just like the mainengines, requires cooling water. Water is supplied to thegenerator through the intake and strainer located justaft of the generator. Raw water is taken in via the rawwater intake and then passes through the strainer and isdischarged through the exhaust of the generator. Consultthe DC Electric Chapter (Chapter 7) of this manual formore information about your generator option.9.3.5 Engine Seacocks and StrainersIt is a very important function for your main engines toremain a specific temperature when operating. This isdone with the aid of raw water from the main engineseacocks. Heat from the closed cooling system on theengines is transferred to the cooler seawater throughheat exchangers inside the engine. The raw water is thendischarged through the exhaust. To clean your main engine strainer, first close the mainengine seacock, remove the top cover on the strainerremove the screen and clean.! CAUTION !Always ensure engine, or generator seacocks, orintakes are open before starting. Failure to do socould overheat and a damage these components. Before re-installing the cap onto the strainer, check the‘o’ ring that is the seal on the cap. Check for wear, orleakage. Replace if needed (Contact your dealer forreplacement).9.4
