Here we will supply youwith the knowledge to do just that.We will separate this chapter into sections that deal witheach part of your boat. The exterior, the interior, and themechanical components. At the end of the chapter, wewill offer you some maintenance tips and also give youa schedule of maintenance to be performed. Rememberthat any manufacturer’s recommended maintenanceschedules supersedes ours and their specific schedulesor tasks should be performed.14.1 Maintenance MaterialsFollowing is a list of tools we recommend that you carryon board your yacht. Note that this list is the minimumrequired:FlashlightVise grips (small and medium)Needle nose pliersScrew and nut driver set with ratchet handleMulti-bladed knifeSet of screwdrivers (Phillips and flat blade, including“shorty” in bothOffset screwdriverSet of combination wrenches (box at one end, open endat the other)Extra batteries for flashlightSet of tubing wrenchesWire crimping and stripping toolHacksaw14.1.2 Recommended Maintenance MaterialsWe recommend that you carry the following on boardyour yacht:Plastic marine tapeInstant glueSilicone rubberElectrical tapeTwo-part epoxy adhesiveEngine oilSpray lubricant14.1.3 Recommended Spare PartsWe recommend that you carry the following spare partson board your yacht:Engine oil (1 case) (Refer to engine manual).Antifreeze (5 gallons) (Refer to engine manual).Transmission fluid (4 quarts) (Refer to transmissionmanual)Oil filters (2)Coolant pump impeller and cover plate gaskets (2)Spare engine hoses and clamps (2)Electric fusesFuel filters (4)Water hose or pipe for freshwater unionsPipe or hose unionsEngine accessory belts (2 complete sets)Propeller and shaft (for extended cruises)To keep the exterior of your boat in good condition, youshould follow a periodic preventive maintenance programand practice good storage habits. In this section, areimportant suggestions that will help keep your boat in thebest possible condition.14.2 Exterior14.2.1 Care and Maintenance During SummerMonthsBefore storing your boat, remove loose items such ascushions, towels, and similar items. Water trapped underthese items can cause gelcoat discoloration and mildew.After each use, rinse the entire boat with fresh water. Ifthe boat has been used in brackish or salt water, use amild soap during the washdown.Covering your boat between uses will protect the finishfrom direct sunlight. Do not cover it with anything thatwill not allow moisture to evaporate, for example, sheetplastic.14.2.2 Finish ProtectionWaxing two or four times a year is recommended. If youare in a climate where you use your boat year round, waxyour boat every three months. If you have a summerboating season, wax at the beginning of the season andbefore winter storage.14.2
