<strong>Hunter</strong> e36 • Underwater Gear6.1.4 StrutsEach propeller shaft is supported by manganese bronzestruts fastened to the bottom of the hull. The struts havereplaceable bearings to minimize wear and to protectthe shaft at the points where it passes through the struthubs. The strut bearings should be inspected annuallyand replaced as necessary. Location of the struts can befound in the Underwater Gear Components illustrationsat the end of this chapter.6.1.5 Shaft Log / Stuffing BoxThe shaft log is a fiberglass tube inserted into an openingin the bottom of the boat aft, for the propeller shaft.A short length of flexible hose connects the shaft stuffingbox to the shaft log. See fig. 6.1.The stuffing box keeps water from leaking around theshaft into the boat. The stuffing box has a Flex packingsystem.6.2 Steering Components! DANGER !Keep clear of moving steering parts at all times. Shaft alignment maychange slightly after your boat is in use. Your dealershould check alignment as part of commissioning, particularlyif there is vibration, a drumming sound, or lossof RPM’s.If alignment is necessary, see your authorized servicetechnician.The steering system on your boat uses a rack and pinionsetup that connect the wheel to the steering gear via adirect drag link. Fig. 6.4 gives you a view at some of thebasic components of this system.To keep it in the top operating condition please read yourmanual supplied in your owner’s packet. This manual containsall the system requirements and maintenance requirementsto keep your steering system working for years.6.3
