Hunter e36 • Engines and TransmissionsThe raw water cooling system is described in detail inyour “Water Systems” (section 9) of this manual. Theinternal engine cooling system is supplied by the enginemanufacturer. This system features a closed antifreezecoolant bottled in a reservoir attached to the engine.Coolant is circulated through the engine in separatechannels than the raw water cooling.Note: Be sure the engine seacocks are open before you startthe engine. Failure to open them will cause damage to thewater pump impeller.! DANGER !Hot coolant under pressure may boil over and causeburns or other personal injury when pressure cap isremoved. Allow engine to cool. Open pressure capslowly to allow pressure to vent before removingcap.11.1.5 Emergency EquipmentYour engines are set up to operate under the toughestconditions. However, should the oil pressure becometoo low, or the engine overheat, alarms will sound atthe helm. There are several conditions that will soundan alarm and save you from damaging your engines.Be sure and study your documentation supplied by theengine manufacturer to ensure you will know what thealarm means should one sound on your boat.11.2 TransmissionsThe transmission has a reduction gear which drivesthe propeller at a slower rotation speed than that of theengine.A. Oil filler capB. DipstickConsult your OEM manual for complete transmissioninformation.11.3 Operations and MaintenanceIn the Underway Chapter, (Chapter 12) you will findinstructions on starting your engines. Also detailed in themanufacturer’s documentation supplied with your boat, you will find instructions on maintenance items that youmay perform yourself. Should you have any questionsregarding maintenance or operations not provided, besure and consult your boat dealer.Important: Shift the transmission only when the engine speedis at or below 1000 rpm. Shifting at higher engine speeds couldseverely damage the boat, the transmission, and the engine.Allow the transmission to remain in neutral for a few secondsbefore reversing the rotation of the propeller.11.3.1 HydrolockHydrolock is caused by water entering the engine cylindersthrough the exhaust. The following conditions cancause hydrolock.Engine shutdown: A sudden engine shutdown while theboat is moving may force water into the exhaust system.Anchored or adrift: Rough seas may cause rockingsevere enough to cause water to splash out of the mufflersinto the engine while the engines are shut down, anchored from the stern, pulling a sea anchor, or adrift.Improper hoisting: Operators are sometimes tempted toreduce hoisting time for propeller changes by hoisting onlythe boat stern. Such hoisting can cause residual water inthe exhaust system to enter the engine cylinders.! WARNING !Engine manufacturers do not warranty items damagedby hydrolock.11.3.2 Engine / Generator ExhaustFig. 11.3Your engine exhaust contains Carbon Monoxide! Besure and read the Boating Safety Chapter and knowthe dangers and how to avoid them. Carbon Monoxidewill kill you, and in most situations, by the time youknow something is wrong it could be too late. Know11.4
