Because Carbon Monoxide is an odorless, colorlessgas that prevents the blood from carrying oxygento the vital organs. CO (Carbon Monoxide) is 200 timesmore likely to replace oxygen in the blood.Check the symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning inthis chapter (4.2.4) again right now, so you will be able torecognize these symptoms should they ever arise.MildExposureMediumexposureExtremeexposure! DANGER !100 – 400 PPM(parts per million)causes headaches andfatigue resembling the flu.400 – 800 PPM causes severe headaches,drowsiness, nausea, andrapid heart rate.over 800 PPM results in unconsciousness,convulsions, heartor respiratory failure, anddeath.Many reported cases of Carbon Monoxide poisoningdetermined that while victims are aware they are notwell, they become so disoriented, they are unable to savethemselves by either exiting the building or calling forassistance. Also, children and pets may be affected first.Carbon Monoxide gas is produced when any type of fuelis incompletely burned. Gasoline engines and fuel burningappliances (furnace, fireplace, oven, stove, waterheater, etc.) also, space heaters, gas, and charcoal grillsproduce CO.Extended operation of unvented fuel burning appliances(range, oven, fireplace, etc.) can build up high CO levels.! CAUTION !This alarm will only indicate the presence of CarbonMonoxide gas at the sensor. Carbon Monoxide gasmay be present in other areas.! WARNING !To reduce the risk of Carbon Monoxide poisoning, testthe alarm’s operation after the boat has been in storage,before each trip, and once a week during use.• DO NOT attempt to test the alarm by any othermeans than by using the Test/Reset button.• DO NOT attempt to produce CO to test the alarm. TheTest/Reset button tests all functions of the alarm and isthe only safe way to be sure the alarm is working properly.Once again, here and now, check in the DC Electricchapter on the operation of your CO detector. Learn howto use it, how it works, what the alarm signals are, andwhat your response should be.! DANGER !Actuation of your CO alarm indicates the presence ofCarbon Monoxide (CO) which will KILL YOU! If thealarm sounds:1. Press the Reset/Silence button.2. Call Emergency Services: Write the number here____________________________.3. Immediately move to fresh air, outdoors, or to an openwindow or door. Do a head count to check that all personsare accounted for. Do not re-enter the premises nor moveaway from an open door or window until the emergencyresponders have arrived, the premises have been airedout, and your alarm remains in its normal operation.4.
