Refer to the Operation and Maintenancesubject of this section for details on the servicing or maintenanceof the shower sump. Fig. 10.4 shows you thesump pump.overboard in U.S. lakes, rivers, bays, and sounds and within 3miles of shore in international waters is prohibited. Check withthe Coast Guard regarding regulations in your area.Refer to the mechanical arrangement illustration in theBoating Safety section or the Sanitation arrangementat the end of this section for location information for themacerator pump. Fig. 10.5 is the image of the pump.Macerator PumpFig. 10.5Fig. 10.4Later in this section, we will discuss in greater detail,the process in performing routine maintenance on yourshower sump.10.2.4 Macerator Pump (Not Available)The macerator pump disposes of black water dischargeor raw sewage. This will be any material from the holdingtanks.Your toilet pumps the material to your holding tanks, thenwhen you are in legal waters to dispose of the materials,you can remove the materials from your holding tankswith the macerator pump. Refer to the Operations andMaintenance subject in this section to learn how to operatethe macerator safely.The macerator pump acts as a garbage disposal in yourhome. The pump contains “chopping wheels” that chopand grind the solid waste into pieces small enough topass through the discharge hoses and the overboarddischarge valve.Important: U.S. Coast Guard regulations require that boatshave a sanitation system on board to control pollution. Wasteis to be stored in a holding tank or other device so it can beproperly disposed of at a shore facility. Discharging this waste10.3 Other Waste Related Equipment10.3.1 Engine / Generator ExhaustThe subject here will be discussed in the Engine &Transmission Section. The motivation for placing thissubject in the Sanitation System Section is due to thefact that exhaust is discharged from your boat. We willhave an entire subject concerning engine and generatorexhaust in the Engines and Transmissions Section. Herewe will simply mention that the exhaust is a gas, CarbonMonoxide (see Boating Safety Section) and is verydangerous. Be sure to follow all guidelines concerningCarbon Monoxide.10.3.2 Holding TankThe holding tank on your boat is installed to hold blackwater waste until you can safely dispose or pump itoverboard. Refer to the Arrangement Illustrations in theBoating Safety section or at the end of this section forlocation information about the holding tank. Refer to theOperations and Maintenance subject of this section tolearn how to perform maintenance on your holding tank,or to learn how to pump it out.Remember: You must make sure it is legal to empty your hold-10.4
