<strong>Hunter</strong> e36 • Underwater Gear6.2.2 RuddersYour <strong>Hunter</strong> rudder is constructed with a foam filledcomposite blade by hand lay-up connected to an internalstainless steel grid and rudder stock structure. The rudderbearings are self lubricating type bearings. Ensureto inspect the freeand smooth operationof the rudderstock and bearingsat regular intervals.Fig. 6.5 showsyou a view at therudder under yourboat.Your steeringsystem is a veryimportant part ofyour boat and veryimportant to yourboating safety.However, all boatoperator’s shouldbe prepared forrudder failure orloss. That is why<strong>Hunter</strong> Marine hasFig. 6.5a backup ruddersystem that can be purchased for our currentmodels. Other commercial suppliers offer similar systemsat differing benefits and costs. You should conductyour own analysis to determine which alternative is bestfor you.! CAUTION !Because the backup system can also be lost anoperator must be able to sail without a rudder or otherwisebe prepared to assemble a makeshift rudder.Important: Look to the Getting Underway Chapter (chapter 12)for information about using your emergency tiller system. Theconnections and use are detailed in that section.The next Figure in this section will allow you to observethe cross section illustration of the rudder installed onyour boat. This view also shows you the upper andlower rudder bearings.6.3 Seawater Intake6.3.1 Skin Fittings and IntakesOn the bottom of your boat, you will find skin fittings andintakes for the supply and discharge to your boat’s varioussystems.Care should be taken that these intakes and skin fittingsare cleaned of barnacles and other growth as specifiedin the maintenance section of this manual to maintain aclear, open passageway.THROUGH HULLSTREET ELLTHROUGH HULL NUTTYP. Be sure and referto your documentation in your owner’s packet to find outthe details about this equipment.6.4 Windlass and Anchoring (Option)6.4.1 WindlassFig. 6.6The windlass facilitates the anchoring of your boat byautomatically raising and lowering the anchor. To operatethe windlass, the windlass power switch at the Navstation must be switched on.Note: It is important that the windlass clutch is tight for properoperation and safety. Periodically check the clutch and tightenif necessary.6.4
