Code: 10• NAME OF THE PROJECT Balajothi Centre for the Disabled• LOCATION Bangalore, Karnataka• CONTACT PERSON Mr. Balaraj Joseph• THEME OR TYPE OF PROJECT Works regarding Health and disability• AIMS OF THE PROJECT Balajothi Centre for the Disabled (Balajothi) is a registeredTrust established in 2004 for charitable objects andpurposes and to promote activities for the prevention ofDisabilities; and to provide for treatment, education andrehabilitation and generally for the care, welfare and socialadvancement of persons with all kinds of physical and/ormental disabilities such as Autism, Cerebral Palsy, MentalRetardation and Multiple Disabilities including physicaland visual impairments, learning disabilities, etc.• PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES Our service to the Disabled includes, inter alia,physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy,special education, temporary respite care, pre-vocationaltraining and training in ADL.Our activities include wheel chair donation, medicalassistance, mid-day meal, transportation, counselling, selfhelp group, assist in obtaining disability card, spreadingawareness on Disabilities and facilities available, andinteraction with Autism Society of India at the nationallevel.• COMMUNITY CONTEXT Geographical :For Centre: persons from areas surroundingBenson Town,For CBR work: persons in rural areas of Kolar, KGF andMysore.Social: Persons belonging to all kinds of social strata fromIT savy Family to parents who work as domestic help.Economical: Majority from very poor and economicallybackward family background.• VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS Volunteers will be required to work with disabled personsincluding those with Autism, Mental Retardation, CerebralPalsy, Speech impairment, Multiple disabilities, slowlearners etc. Hence a high level of patience, persistencewith the child in doing his / her work, warmth and affectionfor the child, the ability to empathize with the familysituation, high level of tolerance are some of thecharacteristics of a good volunteer in this field.If specific skills like language, technical or manual skills,age, gender, etc. , are required, please justify.Volunteers need to be able to hold the attention of childrenthrough singing, playing musical instruments, playactivities, fun activities and games.• VOLUNTEER’S TASKS Academic teaching – for those who are marginally disabledand academic orientedSkills teaching – to train disabled persons to developexisting or new skills of their choiceCare giving – to attend to the disabled child’s needsRehabilitation – to provide therapy as requiredRespite care – to manage children with high levels ofdisability.• HOST SITUATION Food and accommodation will be provide by Project

Ourmethod of providing these services will be vis-à-vis theestablishment of community based learning centresthroughout our city and state.• COMMUNITY CONTEXT The organisation is located at south part of Mysore city.The localities of area Majority families are middle leveleconomical groups. The people are helpful to theinstitution.• VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS The Volunteer must be mature, committed, and friendly,responsible and should have good knowledge of English.The volunteers willing to work in this project will have towork for the full program year; travel month must bediscussed with project in-charge depending on the project’sfree time/vacation. Change in project will not be allowed.Since it requires long time commitment.
