Code: 21• NAME OF THE PROJECT Kalkeri Sangeet Vidyalaya• LOCATION Kalkeri village, Dharwad, Karnataka• CONTACT PERSON Mr. Adam Woodward• THEME OR TYPE OF PROJECT Education and music to the children fromeconomically backward families.• AIMS OF THE PROJECT Our main aims are to teach this ancient art of musicwhilst also ensuring all the students get a throughand complete academic education.• PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES KSV is primarily a music school but also has astrong focus on academic education. It is holistic inits approach to education. There are currently 110children who mainly come from economicallymarginalized families. These keen youngsterswould normally not get the opportunity of exposureto Hindustani Classical Music which is taught atthe school.There are also daily yoga classes which ensure thechildren grow up fit, strong and healthy. KSV is aresidential institution. The children and staff comefrom many of the different communities fromNorth Karnataka, this makes for a real culturalmosaic and we are proud of the fact that we all livein harmony together.• COMMUNITY CONTEXT KSV is located in a rural environment. Situated in aquiet and peaceful valley which is ideal for thestudents to study and practice music and academicsubjects. The climate is temperate all year round.We try very hard to develop the project with theleast disturbance to the environment. The majorityof our buildings are traditionally made usinglocally sourced materials. The social fabric withinthe school is very rich as it is made up from manydifferent communities. There are at least eightlanguages spoken within KSV. The economicalenvironment is quite typical of most of rural India.In the village of Kalkeri the main occupation iswithin the agriculture sector.• VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS There is no bias towards volunteer’s gender; bothmale and female are welcome. All volunteers mustbe above the age of eighteen. They should beenthusiastic, adaptable and honest and above allhave an open mind. They should arrive at KSVwith the thought in mind about how best they cancontribute to the project. In the volunteers dailywork there will be contact with children so a desireto work with children is beneficial. As there areusually at least ten volunteers at KSV there must bea willingness to be part of a team. Our location isvery rural and we live in a traditional manner sovolunteers should be prepared to leave behind someof their home comforts that they may be used to.Volunteers must be fluent in one of the followinglanguages; English, French, Hindi or Kannada. Ifvolunteers have certain skills that could be usefulto one specific department, then we will utilize
