Agric. 118: 65, 1910.Neotype: IMI 039752These six species are united by their growth oncreatine and nitrite as sole N-source and their associationto proteinaceous and lipid-containing foods.Their micromorphology is similar to that <strong>of</strong> Viridicata(see above), except P. atramentosum, which hassmooth stipes and a more divaricate penicillus structuresimilar to that <strong>of</strong> P. chrysogenum. FurthermoreP. atramentosum is the most alkalitolerant <strong>of</strong> allterverticillate Penicillia. All species are particularlycommon on cheese, but may also be found on nuts. P.camemberti is the domesticated form <strong>of</strong> P. communeand is strictly associated to white mould cheese suchas Camembert and Brie. P. caseifulvum is only foundas a surface contaminant <strong>of</strong> blue cheeses, and mayimprove the flavour <strong>of</strong> these cheeses. P. communeand P. atramentosum were both described by Thom(1910) during his studies <strong>of</strong> cheese associated Penicilliaand still these species are found as dominant32
