Metal and Nonmetal National Mine Rescue Contest Rules

The written test of thirty-five (35) questions will includeat least ten (10) questions on mine gases from IG 6(Module 2 – Mine Gases) for each team member. Thequestions shall consist of true/false and multiple choicequestions.All tests will be scored by two qualified judges using aScantron test scoring machine. The contestants will beassessed one discount point for each incorrect orunanswered question. Any alterations to the test questionsor answers will be determined to be incorrect by the testjudge and discounts assessed.In special circumstances, individual team members maybe given oral instead of written tests by one or more judges.Requests for consideration shall be presented to the ContestDirector at the time of registration. All other team memberswill take the test at the same time. In any case, the judgeswill not explain the meaning of questions, but may explaina word or words in the questions.JudgesAll judges will be persons trained in mine rescueprocedures; trained in the assembly, use, and care of thedifferent types of breathing apparatus, etc., and will not beconnected with any of the teams, teams’ employers, orcompanies who manufacture apparatus or gas detectingdevices. Exceptions to personnel assigned for judging anyphase of the contest requires the approval of the ContestDirector.Competing teams deserve the full attention of the judgesand only those personnel judging the specific teams areallowed on the field. While the team is in the mine,judges must not ask questions, answer questions, orinterfere with the team. Only personnel approved by theContest Director will be permitted on the field. Mediaaccess and videos for future training aids will be allowedwith the Contest Director’s approval.9
