Where crosscuts are blocked, no team member mayadvance more than three (3) feet beyond the second (2 nd )intersection before tying across <strong>and</strong>/or behind into allunexplored areas that intersect. The second intersectionwill be determined by two crosscuts on either side of theentry being traveled. The first intersection will be theblocked intersection. However, a team will be permitted totie across to adjacent drifts to tie in behind.BarricadesIf a barricade is found, the team will take action to protectthe barricaded persons as indicated by the conditions foundoutside the barricade. For the purposes of contest work, nobarricade will be entered without ventilating in front of thebarricade if: Oxygen (O 2 ) is below 17.0%; or CarbonMonoxide (CO) exceeds 1200 PPM (0.12%); or HydrogenSulfide (H 2 S) exceeds 100 PPM (0.01%); or NitrogenDioxide (NO 2 ) exceeds 20 PPM (0.002%); or SulfurDioxide (SO 2 ) exceeds 100 PPM (0.01%); or CarbonDioxide (CO 2 ) exceeds 4.0%. In the event that gases otherthan these are encountered or indicated by the problem, theteam must ask for stain tubes or testing devices for thesegases if they don’t have them.If conditions behind the barricade are unknown, thebarricade cannot be opened unless the team erects areasonably airtight temporary stopping. The space betweenthe barricade <strong>and</strong> the temporary stopping should be as littleas feasible; however, it should be large enough for the teamto enter. When entering the barricaded area, the opening inthe barricade should be kept to a minimum, the roof in thearea shall be tested, <strong>and</strong> gas tests made.If survivors are found, they shall be given properrespiratory protection. If more than one (1) survivor isbehind the barricade <strong>and</strong> proper protection cannot beprovided for all of them, the team in retreating should keepthe openings in the barricade <strong>and</strong> temporary stopping to a19
