MULTI-GAS INSTRUMENT CONTESTGENERAL RULES1. One gas man will be al lowed for each team en tered inthe Mine Res cue Con test.2. Reg is tra tion will be made with the team reg is tra tion.3. Con tes tants will com pete in re verse or der from theteam's field draw ing or der.4. The Multi-Gas In stru ment Con test will be held at a timeand place des ig nated by the Con test Di rec tor. All writ -ten test ing will be con ducted in iso la tion. Con tes tantswill re main in iso la tion un til they fin ish the bench com -pe ti tion or they will be disqualified.5. Each con tes tant will be pro vided with a multi-gas in stru -ment, along with spare sen sors, bat ter ies, cal i bra tiongas, tub ing, reg u la tors, cal i bra tion hoods and the toolsnec es sary to com plete the prob lem.The cor rect gases and all nec es sary tools and equip mentto com plete the prob lem will be avail able at the work -sta tion. Only those tools and equip ment pro vided willbe used by con tes tants to work the prob lem.6. To tal dis counts of the writ ten, bench, and gas test ingwill de ter mine the win ner. In the event of a tie, the writ -ten test score will de ter mine the win ner. The to tal timeused for the bench and gas test ing will be the sec ond tie -breaker.7. At a pre-des ig nated time af ter the writ ten test, the testjudge will con duct a five-min ute re view of test an swers.8. When un planned de fi cien cies are en coun tered in the in -stru ment, the judges will no tify the con tes tants that thede fi ciency is not part of the prob lem. The judge willstop the clock and cor rect the de fi ciency as needed. Ifthe de fi cien cies are caused by the con tes tant the clockwill not be stopped.44
9. There will be a to tal of six tro phies awarded for theMulti-gas Instrument Contest.WRITTEN TEST1. The writ ten test will be given while the con tes tants arein iso la tion and will con sist of twenty-five (25) mul ti plechoice and true/false ques tions. The ques tions will betaken from:a. MSHA publication IG 6, Mod ule 2, Mine Gasesb. MSHA pub li ca tion IG 6, Mod ule 3, Mine Ven ti la tionc. MSHA Na tional Mine Res cue Con test Rules relatedto mine gasesd. Re spec tive in stru ment man u fac turer’s op er a tionsmanualCon tes tants will be as sessed one (1) dis count point foreach in cor rect or un an swered ques tion. Any al ter ationsto the test ques tions or an swers will be de ter mined to bein cor rect by the test judge and dis counts as sessed.2. Scor ing of the test will be com pleted by at least twoqual i fied judges.MULTI-GAS INSTRUMENT BENCH PROBLEM1. The instrument(s) given to the contestants will havemultiple bugs or problems consisting of any of thefollowing:a. Missing sensorsb. Failed sensorsc. Mis-calibrated sensorsd. Dead or incorrect batteriese. Incorrect alarm pointsf. Missing parts2. Each con tes tant will be ex pected to eval u ate the in stru -ment, fix all of the de fi cien cies, prop erly cal i brate thein stru ment, check for proper ac tion level alarm setpoints, and then use the in stru ment to mea sure the con -cen tra tions of O 2 , CH 4 , CO and NO 2 .45
