TEAM PREPARATION AND PROCEDURESApparatus <strong>and</strong> Material ChecksBefore reporting to the contest field, each team membermust check his/her own apparatus to see if it is chargedproperly <strong>and</strong> in good working condition. These checksmust be within the manufacturer’s specified limits <strong>and</strong> theregenerator fully charged with chemicals. Apparatustightness, valves, warning devices, <strong>and</strong> face pieces are to bechecked according to approved methods for the particularapparatus. The extra breathing apparatus must also betested accordingly.Other materials such as roof testing devices, stretchers,hammers, blankets, fire extinguishers, <strong>and</strong> gas detectorsmust be checked to see that they are in good operatingcondition. If horns are to be used for signaling betweenteam members, they should be checked. A portablecommunication system, utilizing insulated wire strongenough to give <strong>and</strong> receive manual signals, must be used byall teams. Wheeled stretchers will be allowed.BriefingWhen all members of the team have their apparatus fullyassembled <strong>and</strong> ready to wear, the captain should assemblethe team <strong>and</strong> report to the Briefing Station Official whendirected by the guard. The team will be briefed on fieldconditions either by a video or a briefing paper. Thebriefing should contain all pertinent information, includingthe following conditions: classification of the mine;frequency of explosive gas being found; accuracy of themine map; possibility of the mine being cut into anothermine; condition of the fan; have guards been posted;electric power cut off from the mine or affected parts of themine; recovery work that has been accomplished;notification of the local, state, <strong>and</strong> federal agencies; reserverescue teams, equipment, <strong>and</strong> materials that are available.13
