Equipment Checks <strong>and</strong> ProceduresNo testing of equipment is required at the fresh air base.Testing of equipment used by the team will be performedwhile the team is in isolation before reporting to the field.This testing will not be judged, however, if any defectsoccur while working the problem, discounts will beassessed. R<strong>and</strong>om checks of equipment to insure reliabilitymay be made upon completion of the problem.St<strong>and</strong>ard Communications <strong>and</strong> SignalsA portable communication system, utilizing hard wire,will be used to inform the fresh air base of all conditionsencountered. External speakers are not permitted at thelocation of the fresh air base attendant while working theproblem. In the event of a communication failure, the teamwill be required to return to the fresh air base to repair orreplace the system.The following st<strong>and</strong>ard horn blasts or other audiblesignals between team members will be used:1 blast on the horn will mean for the team to “stop” if inmotion2 blasts on the horn will mean “advance”3 blasts on the horn will mean “retreat”4 blasts on the horn will mean “distress”Hoist SignalsThe following signals will be used for the <strong>National</strong><strong>Contest</strong>. The conveyance shall not be moved without acomm<strong>and</strong> signal. When persons are to be hoisted orlowered, they must enter the conveyance <strong>and</strong> close thedoor; then give the signal for the desired level followed byeither “Hoist Persons” (3-1 bells) or “Lower Persons” (3-2bells).9 Bells: Emergency - then ring mine level signal whereemergency exists.15
