MINE RESCUE DISCOUNTS AND INTERPRETATIONSJudge #2Underground Interpretation1. Tests for gases must be made at face ar eas, stoppings,doors, reg u la tors, bar ri cades and other ar eas where con -di tions are un known. When stops are made at the open -ings of cross cuts, in ter sec tions, or drifts turned off thedrift that is be ing trav eled, sep a rate gas tests must bemade across each en try within 25 feet of the rear cap -tain’s position. No place shall be passed with out firstcheck ing the con di tion of that place. That is, if a room isturned from the en try, that room shall be checked be foreex am in ing the en try be yond the open ing. This does notnec es sar ily hold true in cases of en tries. In cases of en -tries turned from the en try be ing trav eled, it is a mat terof choice which en try is to be fol lowed and many thingsmust be taken into con sid er ation in mak ing the choice.How ever, all places must be checked be fore that place ispassed. A team will be con sid ered to have passed anopen ing or in ter sec tion when the No. 5 mem ber is pastthe open ing. All ar eas that have been cleared of smokeand toxic or dan ger ous gases that the teams elect totravel through must be re checked prior to the team’s re -en ter ing. Upon re-entry into these ar eas where the ven ti -la tion has been changed, teams shall make gas tests atall open ings along the route they travel.2. This will de pend on type of in stru ment used. Im properpro ce dure when test ing in cludes the lo ca tion of the in -stru ment when test ing or us ing a gas de tec tion de vicebe yond its lim its or range. For ex am ple, a meth ane de -tec tor must be held over head when test ing be causemethane (CH 4 ) is light and will be found in high placesnear the back or roof. Ni tro gen di ox ide (NO 2 ) is rel a -tively heavy and will be found in greater con cen tra tionsalong the floor and in low places. There fore, this test32
must be made with the tester be low the waist. Car bonmon ox ide (CO) is slightly lighter than air so this testmust be made at chest height.3. Self-explanatory.4. Teams trav el ing ob vi ously faster than a nor mal walk (ama jor ity of judges must con cur on this) shall be dis -counted.5. Do not hes i tate to as sess this dis count; how ever, ex plainand name un au tho rized per son on dis count card andstate in struc tions given, if known.6. Stoppings, doors, reg u la tors, and bar ri cades re quire con -struc tion of tem po rary stoppings by a team be fore ateam may make open ings in the pre-existing stoppings,doors, etc. Doors shall not be opened with out priorknowl edge of the ef fects of the mine ven ti la tion sys tem,un less a tem po rary stop ping has been erected. Reg u la -tors shall not be opened with out prior knowl edge of theef fects of the mine ven ti la tion sys tem, un less a tem po -rary reg u la tor has been erected. This does not ap ply toex ist ing check or drop cur tains used to di rect the air cur -rent. When re treat ing out of a bar ri cade or com ing backthrough a stop ping where an air lock has been erected, itwill not be nec es sary to air lock on the way out, if thiswill not change any ex ist ing ven ti la tion.7. Dur ing a ven ti la tion change, a cur tain that di rects air -flow is re quired to be up graded to a tem po rary bar ri -cade, seal, or stop ping and must be fas tened at top andsides.8. This does not ap ply to check ing mine en trances prior towork ing the prob lem.9. Teams must in form the of fi cial in charge be fore chang -ing the ven ti la tion or elec tric power, and such things asex plo sive gases and the safety of trapped min ers andres cue per son nel must be con sid ered.
