THE JUNIOR HANDLER'S STAKEOBJECTIVETo establish a competition which shall encourage and assist in the training of young people in the handling of fielddogs, and to introduce them to a healthy recreation which they can pursue and enjoy during their adult years.STAKE RULESEligibilityAnyone sponsored by a member of the ABC who, in the opinion of the Field Trial Committee of the trial giving<strong>club</strong>, qualifies as a Novice Junior Handler.Novice Junior Handler: Anyone that has not reached his or her sixteenth (16th) birthday on the opening day of thetrial. The handler must not be a son or daughter of a PROFESSIONAL FIELD TRIAL TRAINER or of any helperor assistant to such professional. Anyone who assists a professional field trial trainer, or who has handled andplaced a dog first, second, third, or fourth, in an Open All Age Stake at a licensed trial shall not be eligible toqualify as a Novice Junior Handler.Dog EligibilityAny Brittanys that meet AKC field trial requirements may be entered by a Novice Junior Handler. There is no agerestriction on the dog so entered, nor is there any requirement that the dog be owned or trained by the novice juniorhandler.StakeThe stake shall be run over a single course not to exceed thirty (30) minutes duration, eight (8) minutes of whichshall be devoted to game birds. Handling shall be on foot, judging on foot or on horseback.Basis of JudgmentThe primary basis of judgment shall be the handler's ability to handle his dog. The handler may enter a puppy,derby, un-broke or broke all age dog. Each age group shall be braced together with puppies running first. Thejudges shall be informed of the age group of the dog, and if the dog is broke to wing and shot. The handler shall beunder judgment and not the performance of the dog.JudgesAnyone qualified in the opinion of the field trial committee of the trial-giving <strong>club</strong> may judge this stake except thatthe judge shall not be a relative of any of the handlers or own a dog in the stake.AwardsA suitable rotating trophy shall be awarded to the winner of this stake, to be retained for one year or until the nextrunning of the stake, whichever is the shorter period. A replica of the trophy shall be awarded for permanentretention. Second, third and fourth shall be awarded suitable trophies for permanent retention. Ribbons shall beawarded to all placements in this event.PlaceAny member Brittany Club may apply to the ABC by letter requesting permission to sponsor the Novice JuniorHandler’s Stake. The application should be submitted one year in advance of the running of the stake. The JuniorHandler’s Committee shall act on applications. There shall only be one <strong>National</strong> Junior Handler Stake each year,rotated region to region if possible.130
