DELEGATE TO THE AMERICAN KENNEL CLUBQUALIFICATIONSThe person appointed should be willing to serve over a long period of time. He should be a long-time member of theABC and have been involved in <strong>club</strong> operations at the national and the regional level. He should be familiar withthe running of both shows and trials and with the problems involved.He should be diplomatic yet strong as his duties shall involve persuading the AKC to grant the ABC certain thingsthat the AKC may not be entirely in favor.He should be able to get to New York to have physical meetings with the AKC personnel when serious problemsarise.He should be familiar with the thinking of the Board and with Board <strong>policy</strong> so that he shall be able to properlybargain with the AKC. The Board should have trust in him.DUTIESThe duties of the Delegate to the AKC are defined as follows:1. To perform the duties of the position as they may be defined by AKC2. To act as liaison between the AKC and the ABC, working for the best interests of the ABC and/or any ofthe ABC regional <strong>club</strong>s which may have unresolved problems with AKC. In the case of a hearing with AKC, thePresident shall contact the AKC Delegate, copy him with all communication and together decide upon the portionthe ABC shall maintain at the hearing. The Delegate shall then contact all necessary persons and <strong>club</strong>s for additionalpertinent information so as to be fully informed before the hearing takes place. After the hearing he shall make acomplete report to the Officers and the Board of Directors.3. To attend the quarterly meetings of the AKC delegates whenever the agenda calls for the discussion of orballoting on matters that affect the ABC or its regional <strong>club</strong>s or members.4. To report to the Board of Directors and Officers of the ABC after each quarterly meeting advising them ofthe voting position taken by the Delegate on all matters pertinent to the ABC and provide minutes of those meetingsas may be appropriate to the Officers and the Directors of the ABC.5. To request the AKC to furnish minutes of all special meetings of AKC concerning ABC Regional <strong>Clubs</strong>and/or individual members. If available from AKC, distribute to the Officers and Directors of the ABC.6. To submit a report of your activities and recommendations to the Agenda Chairman in advance of theannual Board Meeting. This must be done far enough in advance so the Agenda Chairman can have the Agenda inthe hands of the Directors six (6) weeks prior to the Annual Board Meeting. (1992)SELECTION AND TERM OF OFFICEThe delegate shall serve at the pleasure of the Board of Directors and the AKC, as long as he works effectively forthe <strong>club</strong>. It should be kept in mind that when the <strong>club</strong> selects a new delegate, the paper work will takeapproximately six months to complete so it shall be advisable to select a new delegate if at all possible at least six(6) months before the incumbent's resignation becomes effective. Candidates shall be selected by the Board andelection shall take a two- thirds (2/3) majority of the entire Board.If the occasion should arise where a committee unexpectedly has problems with AKC the Delegate shall beinformed of all that has led up to the problem so that he may be properly equipped to serve as liaison between thecommittee and AKC. The AKC Delegate shall be reimbursed for travel expenses to the quarterly AKC Delegatemeetings. (1976) 134
