He received a Bachelor Science degree at Department of AgriculturalChemistry in Seoul National University in 1987. He carried out graduate studies at YonseiUniversity, and received his Ph.D. (Biochemistry) in 1998 for a doctoral thesis titled withthe “Biochemical and functional characteristics of a novel endonuclease from immune celllines”. He then carried out postdoctoral training in Indiana University School of Medicine. In 2005, he joined the faculty in the Department of Microbiology at Hallym UniversityCollege of Medicine. Ongoing studies in his research are aimed at elucidating themechanisms through which CpG-DNAs activate inflammatory gene expressions, and theway how to optimize the innate immune responses through modulating the potency ofCpG-DNAs by sequence rearrangement and phosphorothioate backbone modification.Final goal of his projects is to develop novel therapeutic agent for immunological diseasetreatment based on immunomodulatory mechanism of bacterial CpGoligodeoxynucleotides.Furthermore, his laboratory has also set up the promptly usefulstrategy for the development of therapeutic antibodies or for application in pandemicinfectious diseases by rapid screening of potent B cell epitopes.30 Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
