The stunning, lighted bell tower risingabove Polk Street United MethodistChurch, built in 1928, is justone example of the exquisitearchitectural design of historicdowntown churches.Thousands of Amarilloans worship inchurches, mosques, synagogues, and templesacross the city each week. Many attendthe historic churches in downtown Amarillo,several carrying historical markers oreligibility for listing on the National Registerof Historic Places. First Presbyterian Churchand Polk Street Methodist Church, thecity’s oldest congregation, are immaculateexamples of Gothic architecture. Saint Mary’sCathedral dedicated a new building in 2009that is a beautiful structure with modernand classic lines. Central Church of Christand First Baptist Church have both recentlyundergone renovations that have improvedaccess yet complimented the originalarchitecture. The First Baptist Churchassisted with the building of the originalstructure of the 1916 Mount Zion BaptistChurch whose motto is “the friendly churchwhere we enter to worship and departto serve.”Chapter 2147
The Santa Fe Building has been queen of downtown Amarillo since 1930. It wasthe regional headquarters of Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Companyuntil late in the twentieth century. After years of vacancy, Potter County boughtthe building in 1995 and renovated it to house its offices.
