Serving others iscommonplace, and benevolence is a longestablishedcharacteristic <strong>of</strong> people on theHigh Plains. Amarillo is home to manycharitable organizations. Faith based andother philanthropic entities provide servicesto the hungry, underprivileged, homeless, andphysically challenged throughout the area.The Harrington Foundation, establishedby Sybil Harrington, is an organization thatreflects the philosophy <strong>of</strong> her husband, TexasPanhandle oilman Don Harrington, wherebyhis wealth is returned to the area from whereit originated. Harrington donated the landfor Camp Don Harrington Boy Scout Camp.After he died in 1974, Mrs. Harringtoncontinued his practice <strong>of</strong> philanthropy andformed the Don and Sybil HarringtonFoundation. The Amarillo Area foundation,formed in 1957 to address health care needsin the Texas Panhandle, was instrumental indeveloping the Amarillo Medical Centercomplex. Today the Medical center is namedthe Harrington Regional Medical Centerand serves thousands <strong>of</strong> area residents eachday. The Amarillo Area Foundation, withthe Harrington Foundation as a publicsupporting organization, established theTexas Tech Pharmacy School and continuesto reach out to the Amarillo area to meethealthcare needs. Their philanthropic effortsextend into other quality-<strong>of</strong>-life concernsincluding the establishment <strong>of</strong> the TylerStreet Resource Center to help the homelessand needy as well as the formation <strong>of</strong> theACE Scholarship program.Area firefighters created a Stars and Stripesarchway to support fundraising firefightersbicycling from California to Ground Zeroin New York City. The cyclists werecommemorating 9/11 and raisingawareness for the Leary FirefightersFoundation and the WoundedWarrior project.Chapter 127
