The Junior League <strong>of</strong> Amarillo is an organization<strong>of</strong> women committed to promotingvoluntarism, developing the potential <strong>of</strong>women, and improving communities throughthe effective action and leadership <strong>of</strong> trainedvolunteers. Their exclusively educational andcharitable purpose has been the hallmark <strong>of</strong>their community involvement during theireighty-one year history. Each year, JuniorLeague women volunteer more than 15,000hours <strong>of</strong> which over 5,000 are directly tocommunity agencies. Currently, over 800women are affiliated with the Junior League<strong>of</strong> Amarillo.Originally founded as the Junior WelfareLeague in 1930, the organization became amember <strong>of</strong> the Association <strong>of</strong> Junior Leagues<strong>of</strong> America in 1943. During the first fifteenyears, the principle project <strong>of</strong> the Leaguewas support <strong>of</strong> a free clinic for preschoolchildren with Gladys Seewald as the fulltime chairwoman. Today, the League isstill dedicated to the welfare <strong>of</strong> childrenin Amarillo. In the current year, they willaward grants to Kids’ Café, Child ProtectiveServices Rainbow Room, Teen Court, Hopeand Healing Place, Camp Alphie, and theAmarillo Zoo. They will also give CommunityAssistance Grants to other nonpr<strong>of</strong>its, andaward a $5,000 ACE scholarship to arecipient who attends West Texas A&MUniversity. An important project funded bythe League is the Medical Center LeagueHouse, a facility created in collaboration withBaptist Community Services and HarringtonRegional Medical Center that provides ahome away from home for families withloved ones in the hospital as well as patientsreceiving outpatient care.The League’s fundraising efforts include theannual Best <strong>of</strong> Texas event, sales <strong>of</strong> the cookbooks,Junior League <strong>of</strong> Amarillo AsparagusCookbook, and Beyond the Rim: A Taste <strong>of</strong>Amarillo, a bi-annual Rummage Sale with apreview party the evening before, and theJunior League Golf Classic.The League is located in the historicShelton-Houghton House at 1700 SouthPolk. The Prairie-style home with a Classicalporch was donated to them by MarthaShelton Houghton in 1965. Houghton, thedaughter <strong>of</strong> pioneer ranchers, John MalcolmShelton and Flora Exum Shelton, donatedher home at the request<strong>of</strong> her daughter, Leaguemember, Martha HoughtonGarner. The home features agrand staircase, mahoganypaneling, and maple floors.Many original elements <strong>of</strong>the home are still intacttoday.
