The kindness <strong>of</strong> Amarillo people is <strong>of</strong>tenfound outside the church and charitableinstitutions. Amarillo has a neighborly spiritand a pioneer attitude that has enduredthroughout its history; its citizens <strong>of</strong>ten lend ahand by volunteering time and physical laborwhen disaster or tragedy strikes. Fundraisersspring up around the region, and funds areestablished for orphaned children, fire victims,and those who are affected by deathand illness. The Texas Panhandle is a smallworld; people know their neighbors whetherthey live in Amarillo or neighboring communities.Public service and first respondersare respected in the Amarillo area. In recentyears regional fire departments’ valiantresponse to wildfires has set them apart. Areafirefighters and law enforcement work togetherduring disasters with great communitysupport and fallen heroes are honored.Patriotism is prevalent in the region; whenmembers <strong>of</strong> the Armed Forces come homein flag draped caskets, veterans and othersform motorcycle honor guards to pay tributeand shield the families. Folks on the LlanoEstacado are fiercely proud <strong>of</strong> those whohave sacrificed to serve the nation. ManyAmarilloans are supporters <strong>of</strong> AmericaSupports You Texas, an organization thatsupports United States Military veterans,active service members, and their families.The organization helps send area veterans toWashington D.C., to visit their nationalmemorials via the Honor Flight Network.Opposite: Devlon D.
