TTUHSC is home to theCenter for Women’s Health and Gender-BasedMedicine. The center provides all stages ofphysical, sexual, and emotional health servicesto women. It is also home to the Amarillo BreastCenter of Excellence, a collaborative partnershipbetween Texas Oncology, Northwest TexasHealthcare System, and the SOM to do cancerresearch that will be of great benefit to thewomen of the Texas Panhandle. The AmarilloBreast Center of Excellence was awarded athree-year, full accreditation and will provide awide range of care from mammograms, diagnosis,to surgery. Texas Tech University HealthSciences Center will serve as a portal for womento receive the care they need from any of thethree participating healthcare providers. Thecenter is the only nationally accredited breastcenter within 350 miles.The InfantRisk Center developed by Dr.Tom Hale, is a worldwide call center and database located on the Amarillo campus,designed for the purpose of assisting pregnantand breastfeeding mothers with questionson the use of medications. The WestTexas Influenza Center, where research influ prevention and pandemic studies is done,and the Texas Panhandle Poison Centerare located at the Amarillo campus as well.The Texas Tech School of Medicine CancerResearch Group is a research entity withoutwalls, run out of the surgery center. It is acollaboration of all TTUHSC campuses andTexas Tech University as wellas the University MedicalCenter in Lubbock. By joiningforces, the collective potentialfor maximum effectiveness incancer research will providepremier cancer treatment forWest Texas residents.SiMCentral is a center wherea collaborative partnershipwith TTUHSC, West TexasA&M University, and AmarilloCollege provides training,utilizing high fidelity humanpatient simulators. The mannequin-likesimulators provide multidisciplinarytraining by assisting students withsimulations of real-life medical proceduressuch as tracheal intubations, chest tube insertions,or starting IVs. The high fidelity humanpatient simulators are so life-like the students’experience is almost as if they were performingprocedures on living human beings.
