ROYAL HERALDRY. 349 theory by which we may account for that which some time after the Norman Conquest became the armorial bearings of the English kings, and has continued ever since, viz., the three lions, or leopards passant. The only authentic information can be derived from the regal seals ; and on those of William I. and II., Henry I., Stephen and Henry II., the kings are represented so that the devices on the convex sides, if any, are not visible. The first device, even partially apparent, is on the first seal of Richard I., where the dexter half of the shield alone is visible, and on that there is a figure of a lion rampant, which may have had another or a similar figure on the sinister side, or may have been one of the six lioncels which I have already noticed on page 31. On his return from captivity, however, Richard seems to have had a second seal made, upon which he is represented on horseback, in his coat of mail, his helmet adorned with the Planta Genestae, and on his shield are plainly represented the three lions passant guardant.* There are various theories to account for these lions. That which I venture to add is based upon what I think I have established by facts already shewn, viz., that national ensigns, as well as individual devices, were in vogue at or about that time, e.g. the white horse of the Saxon people ; the golden dragon of Wessex ; the " fighting man " of Harold ; the raven of the Danes. Sandford, in his Genealogical History, states on page i that " as tradition tells us, Rollo, the first Duke of "Normandy, is said to bear on his escocheon the same charge, affecting "as several other northern princes did, that sovereign beast the lyon." This shews, first, that the lion was the charge of the northern princes, probably differenced by colour and attitude, and secondly, that Rollo carried a lion, which accounts for one of the three, viz., the lion of Normandy. He further mentions (page 59) concerning Henry II., "the " opinion of modern genealogists, who say that ' this Henry, before his " ' marriage with Eleanor of Aquitaine, did bear gules two lions passant " ' guardant or, and that the arms of Aquitaine being also a lion or, in " ' a field " gules, did add the same in his shield to his other two lions.' Now what was the second lion r Not, as Sandford seems to imply, a mere duplicate of the lion of Normandy ; but, if the courteous reader will refer to the monumental plate of Geoffry Martel, Duke of Anjou, on page 31, he will see on the cap of the figure a lion passant, which I venture to recognize as the second lion, and which was probably the national ensign of Anjou, just as the lioncels on his shield are the device of the family of Martel. If so, it is very likely that his son, Henry II., having assumed the Norman lion of his mother, the Empress Maud, the daughter of Henry I., and the lion of Anjou, the device of his father, Geoflry Martel, X 2 * See illustration.
