His brother, Edmond Crouchback, Earl of Lancaster, assumed a label
azure, and afterwards charged it with nine fleurs-de-lys
in honour of his
second wife Blanche, Queen of Navarre. Of the younger children of
Edward I., Thomas of Brotherton, Earl of Norfolk, being the eldest son
of the second marriage, seems to have also differenced his arms with a
label of three points argent.
His younger brother, Edmond of Woodstock,
Earl of Kent, assumed a bordure argent.
Edward III.'s younger brother, John of Eltham, Earl of Cornwall,
assumed " a bordure of France," i.e. azure semee-de-lys, in recognition of
his mother Isabel.
Of Edward III.'s
sons, the Black Prince carried the label argent with
three points ;
his wife Joan, " the fair maid of Kent," carried the arms of
her father, Edmond Earl of Kent, but placed the label upon
of her husband.

Lionel Duke of Clarence differenced his arms with the white label;
but in recognition of his marriage with Elizabeth, the great heiress of
De Burgh and of Clare, he distinguished
it sometimes with the cross gules
of the former, and sometimes with the canton gules of the latter.
John of Gaunt, the next brother, distinguished his white label with
three points of ermine on each ;
but when he surrendered the kingdom of
Castile, he bore three fleurs-de-lys
on each point in right of his first wife
Blanche, heiress of Edmund Earl of Lancaster. His children by his third
wife, Catherine Swynford (nee Roet), assumed the surname of Beaufort,
from the place of their residence, and bore the royal arms with a bordure
gobonnee azure and argent.
Edmond of Langley, Duke of York, his younger brother, carried
nine torteaux on his label of argent ; and Thomas of Woodstock, Duke
of Gloucester, the youngest, surrounded his paternal
coat with a bordure
argent.
Richard II. impaled the arms of Edward the Confessor with his
own, and granted to his half-brothers the same coat, with the distinction
to the eldest, John Holland, Duke of Exeter,
of a bordure of France, and
to Thomas Holland, Duke of Kent, the youngest, a bordure argent.
Henry IV., as I have already said, reduced the number of the lilies
to three. Of his younger children, Thomas of Lancaster, Duke of Clarence,
adopted his grandfather's label, viz., argent charged with ermine, to which
he added the canton gules of Clare.
His younger brother, John Duke of Bedford, dimidiated his label,
the dexter portion being argent charged with ermine, the sinister azure

Lancaster. Humphrey of Lancaster, Duke of Gloucester, assumed first a
bordure gobonnee argent and sable, afterwards a bordure argent.
