Abstract
The Spanish fishing sector is the most important of the EU and has a significant
role for wealth creation at national level. Notwithstanding, the security
threats affecting to the fishing industry that carries out its activity in non-EU
waters have been object of little attention in both EU´s and Spain´s Maritime
Security Strategies. The protection of the fleet against piracy attacks
has been tackled in the context of antipiracy operations deployed by the EU.
However, the complex processes of international cooperation needed to fight
against IUU fishing and to improve fisheries governance both in international
waters managed by Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMO)
and in the EEZ of fragile States have not almost been object of attention. This
paper points out the opportunity to develop this line of analysis.
