Sc., Assistant Professor -- Synthetic Chemistry Major Thrust Areas of Research and Achievements The major thrust areas of research include newer methods of Chemical Synthesis of Inorganic and Organic materials; Solid State chemistry; Heterogenous Catalysis; Electrochemistry and its applications; Synthesis of natural products and polymers; Green chemical processes; Synthesis and applications of Nanomaterials; Metal Carboxylate chemistry, and Coordination Compounds. The faculty members published their research work in several peer-viewed national and international journals (please see attached list under H). Faculty members are involved in the following research activities: a. Investigations on metal ion absorption on hydrous manganese oxides. b. Preparation of nano material based active catalysts for carbon dioxide and propylene oxidation reactions, also metal organic type semiconductors for photo degradation of azo dyes. c. Synthesis and characterisation of coordination polymers of alkaline earth /alkali metals and metal sulfido compounds. d. Development of an efficient two step general procedure for the synthesis of avenanthramides e. Preparation of mixed metal transition oxides which shows high sensitivity and selectivity for ppb level gases such as H2S, NH3 etc. at room temperature. f. Development of a convenient method for organic synthesis through Domino Witting Diels-Alder reaction. g. Synthesis of new monomers and poly (sulfite-co-carbonate) polymers and successful testing as solid state nuclear track detectors. h. Design of improved synthetic strategies to obtain nano size Titania. i. Synthesis and characterisation of newer coordination compounds and their applications in catalysis. 28
The Department has several advanced equipments for research and is supported by UGC- SAP and DST-FIST programs. The faculty undertakes projects funded by different funding agencies. List of instruments available in the Department include FT-IR Spectrophotometer (2) (Shimadzu: IR-Prestige-21 and FTIR-8101A), UV-Visible Spectrophotometer (Shimadzu: Uv- 2450), Elemental Analyser, TG-DSC (NETZSCH: STA 409 Pc Luxx), HPLC (JASCO: PU-2080 Plus), GC (Hewlett Packard 5890 series II), Flash Chromatography (Combi Flash, Companion), LCQR Meter, Hysteresis Loop Tracer, Two and Four Probe Electrical Conductivity, Microwave Oven for synthesis, several minor equipments, NMR, and Cyclic Voltammeter. Placement Details • About 6 students were selected by Syngenta Pvt Ltd, Khorlim, Goa. • Students were selected by Pharma industries during the placement fair organised by Goa University. Other Information • B. R. Srinivasan was awarded Bronze Medal by Chemical Research Society of India. • S. P. Kamat awarded ‘Best Teacher Award’ by Chemical Research Society of India. • Seven students of the department cleared NET examination. 29
