It links the MAB community in seven<br />
countries – the Democratic People’s<br />
Republic of Korea, the People’s Republic<br />
of China, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia,<br />
the Republic of Korea and Russia’s Far<br />
East – with more than 50 biosphere<br />
reserves. This is a key mechanism in<br />
a region experiencing rapid economic<br />
growth and development. In 2015,<br />
the network organized its sixth<br />
international in-depth training course,<br />
building capacities of biosphere reserve<br />
managers – including a higher than<br />
average proportion of women – for<br />
the effective management of biosphere<br />
reserves as learning sites for the<br />
sustainable management of changes<br />
and interactions between social and<br />
ecological systems.<br />
Haiti is promoting the creation<br />
of a botanical garden that will be<br />
integrated into its La Selle Biosphere<br />
Reserve, and is also active in<br />
environmental education through the<br />
<strong>UNESCO</strong> Associated Schools Project<br />
(ASP) Network. At the same time,<br />
Chile has extensive experience in<br />
forest policy management and in<br />
cooperating with biosphere reserves<br />
elsewhere in the world. In July,<br />
representatives of the Haitian MAB<br />
National Committee visited Chile to<br />
meet staff of the National Forestry<br />
Corporation (CONAF-Chile), and explore<br />
the opportunity for collaboration based<br />
on these activities. They examined the<br />
management models for La Campana-<br />
Peñuelas Biosphere Reserve, discussed<br />
cooperation protocols, and shared<br />
experiences and the possibility of<br />
strengthening capabilities in the two<br />
nations. This visit gave rise to new<br />
