Celebrating books and <strong>UNESCO</strong> in<br />
Bangladesh<br />
The Ekushey Book Fair at the Bangla<br />
Academy in Dhaka is one of the greatest<br />
book fairs in the world. It attracts<br />
hundreds of writers and publishers,<br />
and millions of visitors each February.<br />
The Bangladesh National Commission<br />
for <strong>UNESCO</strong> selected a double stall at<br />
the fair for its anniversary celebration.<br />
It displayed <strong>UNESCO</strong> publications, posters,<br />
leaflets, photos and related material.<br />
Celebrating intangible cultural<br />
heritage in the Islamic Republic of Iran<br />
Celebrations of the 70 years of <strong>UNESCO</strong><br />
in the Islamic Republic of Iran focused<br />
on culture, and specifically on intangible<br />
cultural heritage, which has become<br />
an increasingly important aspect of<br />
<strong>UNESCO</strong>’s cultural activities. An event<br />
held in May in Tehran included keynote<br />
speeches and reports, an exhibition and<br />
cultural performances on the importance<br />
of intangible cultural heritage for<br />
the promotion of peace, solidarity and<br />
sustainable development. This event<br />
was organized by the Regional Research<br />
Centre for Safeguarding Intangible<br />
Cultural Heritage in West and Central<br />
Asia, under the auspices of the <strong>UNESCO</strong><br />
Intangible Cultural Heritage Centre in<br />
Tehran, and in cooperation with the<br />
<strong>UNESCO</strong> Tehran Cluster Office, the Iranian<br />
National Commission for <strong>UNESCO</strong>, and<br />
the Iranian Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts<br />
and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO).<br />
Postage stamps in Thailand<br />
Thailand Post released two sets of<br />
20 stamps each to celebrate <strong>UNESCO</strong>’s<br />
70th anniversary. The designs feature all<br />

sites. The sets were released at an event<br />
held in Bangkok on World Post Day<br />
(9 October), attended by representatives<br />
of the Universal Postal Union (UPU),<br />
the Asia-Pacific Postal Union (APPU) and<br />
the <strong>UNESCO</strong> Office in Bangkok.<br />
World Heritage and the 70th<br />
anniversary in Viet Nam<br />
<strong>UNESCO</strong>’s 70th anniversary was celebrated<br />
in Viet Nam in conjunction with the<br />
fifth anniversary of the inscription of<br />
the Central Sector of the Imperial Citadel<br />
of Thang Long (Hanoi) on the World<br />
Heritage List. Representatives of the<br />
government and <strong>UNESCO</strong> examined their<br />
joint achievements, and declared their<br />
commitment to continued and enhanced<br />
cooperation to deal with new challenges.<br />

featuring the <strong>UNESCO</strong> World Heritage site of<br />
the Historic City of Ayutthaya (Thailand). The city<br />
was founded in 1350 and was the second capital of<br />
the Siamese Kingdom. This is one of the 20 stamps<br />
released in 2015 by the Thailand Post to celebrate<br />
the 70 years of <strong>UNESCO</strong>.<br />
