Because of its
“hardness, titanium
settings take five times
more time and effort to work
on than the usual 18ct gold used
in fine jewellery,” Chao says. “It
requires a completely different
skill set to heat and form
the metal in much higher
temperatures.”
Her latest creation, a
stunning necklace called
“The Winter Leaves”, is
large and extravagant, yet
the titanium portion of it
only weighs 40 grams. The
piece, which will debut this year
at Biennale des Antiquaires, features
titanium sculpted to water-like effect.
Chan, famous for his multiple innovative
jewellery-making techniques and
designs, also attests to titanium’s
uncompromising character. He spent
eight years trying to tame titanium
before his big breakthrough finally came
in 2007.
“It is very stubborn; its memory is much stronger than that of gold,
meaning that if you bend it, it bounces back,” he explains.
His latest masterpiece, a 2.2m multicoloured peony flower sculpture
titled “Rise of Heart”, is made of titanium and was carved by hand, a
testament to his unique savoir faire.
A veteran manipulator of stones and metals – he pioneered his
Wallace Cut where a design is cut directly inside a stone – he is
constantly driven by a need to make his fantasies a reality.

“I am really interested in metallurgy and when I am not creating, I
am in my lab mixing materials,” he says. “There are unconventional
materials and there are unconventional ways to use conventional
materials. My challenge is to explore the potential of each material.”
Luxury brands are also looking towards atypical materials for
inspiration. Boucheron, for example, used Indian Makrana marble –
the same type of marble used to build the Taj Mahal – in its Bleu de
Jodhpur collection last year. Lapis lazuli, prized in ancient times and
used to decorate King Tutankhamun’s funeral mask, now adorns
the dials of Hermes’ cocktail watches. And at Bulgari this year, the

不 少 奢 華 品 牌 均 開 始 選 用 傳 統 以 外 的 物 料 去 打 造 創 新 之 作 。 正 如 寶 詩 龍 於 去 年 就 以 印 度 馬 克
拉 納 大 理 石 創 作 “Bleu de Jodhpur” 系 列 。 這 種 大 理 石 與 建 造 泰 姬 陵 的 大 理 石 一 致 。 青 金 石
為 古 時 珍 貴 的 物 料 , 曾 用 作 裝 飾 法 老 王 圖 坦 卡 蒙 的 葬 禮 面 罩 , 而 愛 馬 仕 的 雞 尾 酒 腕 錶 錶 盤 就
用 上 了 青 金 石 作 點 綴 。 今 年 , 寶 格 麗 亦 重 塑 其 高 級 珠 寶 系 列 的 經 典 蛇 形 項 鏈 , 並 以 南 美 洲 的 蛇
紋 樹 打 造 蛇 身 鱗 片 。
