Rod resistance formula<br />

The next stage is to convert the resistivity figures obtained into a resistance value<br />

for the earth electrodes. For example, it is useful to able to predict in advance the<br />

resistance value <strong>of</strong> a single earth electrode in order to optimise its length.<br />

The simplified formula is:<br />

where r = resistance <strong>of</strong> the rod (W)<br />

r = resistivity measurement taken at certain spacings (Wm)<br />

D = depth <strong>of</strong> rod (m)<br />

d = diameter <strong>of</strong> rod (m).<br />

Example from Table 7.2<br />

Taking a reading from Table 7.2, the approximate resistance <strong>of</strong> a rod driven to a<br />

depth <strong>of</strong> 3m is calculated as follows:
