as 50, 60 and 400Hz.They may also have static and manual bypass switches for maintenance<br />

or overload. The basic principle is to rectify the incoming supply, to provide<br />

thereby a direct current for charging a battery and to operate an inverter to the<br />

desired frequency <strong>of</strong> output. The battery acts as a standby source but also provides<br />

an excellent filter and smoothing circuit. If necessary additional units can be combined<br />

to provide redundancy for important computer installations. The units would<br />

also normally be supplied with a status monitor which could energise a remote<br />

control unit.<br />
