Force commutated variable frequency inverters are used to control the speed <strong>of</strong><br />

cage motors up to 800kW. Above 800kW the machines used are synchronous<br />

motors because they are able to provide the reactive kVA necessary for commutation<br />

and so avoid the components and complexity associated with forced commutation.The<br />

inductance <strong>of</strong> the drive motor distributed stator windings has a pr<strong>of</strong>ound<br />

smoothing effect on the current in the stator. The current thus approximates closely<br />

to a sine wave. Obviously any harmonic currents present produce heat without<br />

contributing to the output torque <strong>of</strong> the motor. In general, the harmonic currents<br />

present require derating <strong>of</strong> both cage and synchronous motors by between<br />

10 and 15%.<br />

Additional motor derating is probably necessary if they are to run below normal<br />

full speed for extended periods unless the cooling system is independent <strong>of</strong> speed.
