Dulcídio Portugal Dulcídio defines Art as communication, dreams, emotions, protest, aestheticism, and the ultimate human realization. “The good things in life are made with art”. The need to communicate and personal fulfilment are what drive him to create. Dulcídio is essentially driven by his emotional responses but, more importantly, he finds his personal balance when creating a painting. Dulcídio exposes his inner sensitivities for the viewer to analyse and understand, welcoming their responses and evaluation. Should the viewer fail to react then he experiences a disturbing sense of disappointment. Much of Dulcídio works are thought provoking, laced with social comment; crying out to be regarded as a serious alert to the problems faced by today’s society. In other works we see his fascination with light and surrealism often realised through his depictures of creatures from the sea. As a keen scuba diver, Dulcídio has often immersed himself in the surreal world of these alien-like forms and his fascination with them is plain. Pulsating life forms propel through the blackness and we can almost feel the movement as they resonate on the canvas. Seen within a dark space, light penetrates the darkness both from the outside and from the life forms themselves which glow with an inner, energetic luminosity. Each organism radiates its own light and illuminates the shadowy world in which it thrives. This darkness is not threatening; it is more akin to a comforting cocoon nurturing its progeny. The joy of the beauty of the subject matter felt by Dulcídio is evident, transmitting freedom and abandonment to the elements which give them life. Other images are more thought provoking, juxtaposing unfamiliar elements which become unified within an eerily lit, serene environment often reminiscent of the work of Dali or Max Ernst but transmitting tranquility rather than disquiet. Dulcídio is the founder, manager and president of the Galeria Aberta - Artists Association.
