Statement of Understanding of <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Corps</strong> Drug Policy<br />

(Application for Officer Programs)<br />

The purpose of this statement of Understanding (SOU) is to ensure<br />

that before you enlist in the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Corps</strong> you understand completely<br />

what the <strong>Corps</strong>’ policy is towards the use, sale, or transfer of illegal<br />

drugs.<br />

The <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Corps</strong> does not tolerate involvement, of any nature, with<br />

illegal drugs. The use of illegal drugs is fundamentally wrong and<br />

destructive to our <strong>Corps</strong>’ effectiveness. Offenders will be prosecuted<br />

to the fullest extent permitted by the UCMJ.<br />

<strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Corps</strong> officers require a security clearance. In order to<br />

obtain a security clearance, a national check of police and security<br />

agencies and/or a comprehensive background investigation involving<br />

personal interviews with previous employers, school officals,<br />

acquaintances and other individuals having knowledge, of your past<br />

activities and moral character is conducted. Should these investigations<br />

reveal previous drug involvement which you withheld when<br />

completing NAVMC 10418-3 (Examination of Applicant by recruiting<br />

Officer (1130)) you may be immediately discharged from the service<br />

under less than honorable conditions.<br />

In the <strong>Corps</strong>, every <strong>Marine</strong> has a responsibility for the lives of<br />

fellow <strong>Marine</strong>s. It is your responsibility to use all your influence<br />

over fellow <strong>Marine</strong>s to help avoid involvement with illegal drugs. As a<br />

<strong>Marine</strong> you are expected to be deditcated to the highest standards of<br />

personal conduct and honor. When you take the oath of allegiance, you<br />

are making a solemn commitment to the traditions and values of the<br />

<strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Corps</strong>. In this regard, if you are totally committed to maintaining<br />

the highest standard of personal conduct and honor possible,<br />

complete and sign the following statement:<br />

stand the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Corps</strong> drug policy, specifically that:<br />

a. Any drug involvement by <strong>Marine</strong>s is against the law.<br />

b. Any involvement with drugs violates the high standards of<br />

behavior and performance expected of a <strong>Marine</strong> and it will not be<br />

tolerated.<br />

c. Service in the United States <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Corps</strong> places me in a<br />

position of special trust and responsibility which includes a<br />

responsibility over my fellow <strong>Marine</strong>s to help them avoid involvement<br />

with illegal drugs.<br />
