About the Author
Peter Szatmari, MD, has been working in the field of autism and pervasive
developmental disorders for more than twenty years. He is the director
of the Canadian Autism Intervention Research Network (CAIRN), a
group of parents, clinicians, and scientists attempting to develop a
research agenda on early intervention in autism. CAIRN supports a
website (www.cairn-site.com) that disseminates the latest evidencebased
information on early intervention and screening in autism.
Dr. Szatmari is supported by a Senior Research Fellowship Award
from the Ontario Mental Health Foundation and is editor of the journal
Evidence-Based Mental Health. He was instrumental in developing the
Pervasive Developmental Disorder Team at Chedoke Child and Family
Centre, a regional diagnostic and treatment program for children with
this diagnosis. He served for five years on the Board of Directors of Autism
Society Ontario and as the chairman of the Research Committee
for that organization. He has been a consultant to various government
agencies in Canada, the United States, and internationally on research
and on treatment services for children with autism spectrum disorders.
Currently, Dr. Szatmari is Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral
Neurosciences, Vice-Chair of Research, and Head of the Division of
Child Psychiatry at McMaster University. He is also a member of the
Offord Centre for Child Studies and holds the Chedoke Health Chair in
Child Psychiatry at McMaster University.
