4. NEEM IN DEVELOPMENT-COOPERATION PROJECTS
DEPA, Fitossanidade
Some research is carried out by DEPA against pests such as Spodoptera frugiperda, in
maize, Mononychellus tanajoa (Cassava green mite) in Cassava, Tuta absoluta in Tomato
and against cabbage pests such as Diamondback moth.
Other efforts to make use of neem’s excellent potential for pest control are known from
chemical laboratories, which however to date have to rely on raw material supply from
abroad.
No neem based pesticide was registered in 1999, but some Indian products were about to
receive registration.

BURKINA FASO
As in all Sahelian countries you can find considerable numbers of neem trees. This is also
true for Burkina Faso.
A comparable high number of NGOs and farmers groups are processing neem on village
level, partly specialised in oil production or soap making etc. especially in the north of the
country.
The University of Ouagadougou
in conjunction with external research institutions had conducted research with neem formulations
against pest of rice, groundnut and vegetables. Also a <strong>report</strong> is available about a local
industry which uses neem leaves in mosquito coils for repelling mosquitoes in the wet
season.
Service Inter-Africain sur les Technologies Appropriées - SIATA
The GATE/GTZ-supported NGO network SIATA is based in Burkina Faso and has supported
some NGOs/CBOs to carry out training on the neem-processing, such as the production of
oil, soap and natural insecticides.
In addition SIATA produced a range of technical <strong>report</strong>s and readers, not only on neem processing
but also on other topics of appropriate technology.

“Centre Ecologique Albert Schweitzer” (CEAS)
An other active group is CEAS founded in 1980, which is based in Bamako. Since 1995
CEAS have had a “natural pesticide” component in their training programme. The group runs
