4. NEEM IN DEVELOPMENT-COOPERATION PROJECTS
Key activities on neem: The NARS in Laloki (Port Moresby), Lowland Agricultural Experimental
Station in East New Britain and Bubia (near Lae) were conducting on station and on
farm trials with neem extracts and commercial neem based pesticides mainly on vegetables
and maize. Awareness seminars took place and the application of neem were promoted
among farmers. The activities where partly assisted by GTZ and German Development
Service.
Some thousand neem trees where planted in East New Britain and single trees disseminated
to the islands such as Lihir, New Ireland and Manus. A forestry researcher, based in Bubia
NARS, investigated the use of neem for re-afforestration.

The NGO RAAA is promoting non synthetic pesticides including the use of commercial neem
products within sustainable agriculture.

PHILIPPINES
Philippine-German Biocontrol GTZ Project
Neem Initiative of the "Bureau of Plant Industry"
Founded: 1989- 1996 (CIM assisted until 1999)
Short description: The governmental "Bureau of Plant Industry" in the Ministry of Agriculture,
Manila, was working on the dissemination of appropriate agricultural technologies in cooperation
with the regional substations and extension services.
Activities with neem: Planting and dissemination of the neem tree for afforestation and as a
shade tree; use of seeds as biological pesticide. Some research were carried out to screen
neem extracts and neem products mainly against cabbage, tomato and maize pests. Due to
the fact that hurricanes are frequently devastating the Philippines, the islands are not
considered as suitable for extended neem promotion programmes, although the tree thrives
well under the given weather conditions e.g. in Cebu island. Several leaflets and scientific
publications were produced by the project.
