SURINAM 4. NEEM IN DEVELOPMENT-COOPERATION PROJECTS Neem is used in Surinam for recultivation after mining on laterit soil since a few years. Awareness on the potentials of neem are carried out by Dr. Van de Lande, working for the local university. CONTACT: Dr. v. d. Lande, c/o Limesgracht 95-97, Paramiribo, e-mail: hvdlande(@)sr.net TANZANIA "SECAP, Soil Erosion Control/Agroforestry Project“ Time Frame: 1981 - 2000 Short description of the project: Project within the scope of TC with Tanzania that is working in the fields of erosion protection, reafforestation and fruit and vegetable cropping in the Lushoto region. Activities with neem: Dissemination of neem’s usage as a non-synthetic pesticide in vegetable growing; planting of trees; demonstrations Target group: Farmers, in particular vegetable producers Urban Agriculture Project - GTZ As part of general training on urban agriculture, the potential of the many neem trees growing in towns is promoted by the UA project. This comprised training and providing of information and technical brochures. The GTZ brochure “Neem- a natural insecticide” is translated in Kiswhaheli and available in printed form by the UA project. Nice Botanical Pharmacy – Association for Rural Development Promotion ARDEP The NGO ARDEP is active in creating awareness of neem uses through seminars and mass media. They are training young farmers, schools and the Livestock Training Institute in Tanga. ARDEP is conducting trials to control pests and fungi on cashew, tomato, coffee and other horticultural crops. Additionally ARDEP is trading with neem seeds and manufacturing candles, soaps and mosquito repellent made of neem oil. CONTACT: ARDEP, PO Box 814, Tanga, Technotan The NGO Technotan is promoting neem within sustainable agriculture training. Technotan is processing neem seeds into oil and cake and conducting awareness seminars. Research on the properties of neem derived extracts are also carried out by the University of Dar es Salaam. 89

NEEM IN DEVELOPMENT-COOPERATION PROJECTS INADES Formation – Misereor Inades carried out two work-shops on natural crop protection in 1996 and 1998 for representatives from east African countries (Uganda, Kenya, Sambia, Tanzania) with assistance of the German church NGO Misereor. The participants of the workshop provided a number of recipes on (local) plants with insecticidal properties and agreed to screen in their working area. CONTACT: Inades Formation , PO Box 203, Dodoma, Tanzania Further initiatives: In Kikatitti, between Arusha and Moshi, exist a Japanese tree planting project which is promoting the use of neem for medicinal but also for agricultural purposes. Literature: INADES (1996): Natural Crop Protection- Workshop Report, 43 pp INADES (1998): Natural Crop Protection- Follow-up Workshop Report, 53 pp THAILAND In Thailand a native neem-tree species, the "Thai-neem" as it is known (Azadirachta siamensis), is found in large numbers throughout the country (19). The disadvantages of this species are the lower concentration of insecticidal agents and the fact that the pulp is very difficult to separate from the seeds. Nevertheless, both the state and the private sector have, over the past few years, being trying hard to disseminate its usage as a pesticide. However, these efforts not only focus on the native "Thai-neem", but also on the Indian neem tree Azadirachta indica" The requisite raw materials have to date been to a certain part imported from India or Myanmar (seeds, oil, press cakes). The main reason for these initiatives is the export of agricultural produce to Europe and the USA which are not permitted to contain any chemical pesticide residues. The government of Thailand via "Department of Agriculture, Division of Agricultural Toxic Substances" in the Ministry of Agriculture in Bangkok and several Universities carried out a number of scientific trials and socio-economic investigations among others with assistance of American universities on the use of neem.
