4. NEEM IN DEVELOPMENT-COOPERATION PROJECTS

Key activity on neem: Since some years INRAN is working on natural pesticides such as
Sesbania and neem.
INRAN had worked out the production of neem pesticides (based on neem oil, alcoholic
extracts on laboratory scale). In 1999 the PROBIOPEC project in cooperation with an NGO,
private entrepreneur and TC agencies was said to be set up with the aim to set up a
production plant which would produce and sell 500-1000 biopesticides annually for half- ¼ of
the price for comparable synthetic pesticides.

NIGERIA
Research has been carried out at the local universities and agricultural training schools with
crude neem extracts and neem cake. Obviously the knowledge on neem as a pesticide is
also part of the curriculum for agricultural extension trainers.
Considerable amounts of dry neem seeds have been exported from Nigeria to Australia and
Europe for about 0.12 US$/kg.
Federal University of Technology – Akure
This University studies has been conducted to integrate neem into IPM concepts on cowpea.
Also Ekiti State Agriculture Development Programme is working on neem.
