4. NEEM IN DEVELOPMENT-COOPERATION PROJECTS
KENYA
ICIPE, International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology
Founded: 1971
Short description: International agricultural research institute in Nairobi, Kenya, which aims to
develop environmentally-compatible control measures for insect pests in the tropical regions
of Africa.
Activities with neem: plant protection in horticulture, fruits, banana, staple crops such as
corn. In addition successful trials on vector control, such as ticks and mosquitos and on
bednet impregnation has been conducted with neem products. Neem processing is
demonstrated at ICIPE’s “Techno Park” and at Mbita field station on small scale and in a “Bio
village” in Ethiopia.
In addition comprehensive research into the possible uses of neem as a natural pesticide
has been carried out on station and on field level. ICIPE is the executing agency of the GTZfinanced
measure "Using Neem Seeds in the Small-scale, Industrial Manufacturing of
Insecticides”.

Neem Awareness project at Mbita Field station
1994-1999, financed by FINNIDA and UNDP
The project carried out several conferences which invited international reputed researchers
on neem and invited participants from several countries in eastern Africa. Attached to the
conferences demonstration of neem processing and training courses were carried out with
the participants.
Further activities were tree planting near Lake Victoria and in other east African countries in
cooperation with schools, institutions such as ICRAF, compiling training material and a directory
of neem workers in east Africa; a bibliography of 5000 entries and a neem manual
are about to published in 2000.
Additionally some research on neem against pest in banana, corn etc was carried out and
assisted.
