4. NEEM IN DEVELOPMENT-COOPERATION PROJECTS

SENCHIM is a commercial, large scale agriculture input supplier for west African countries.
Key activities on Neem: SENCHIM set up a neem processing plant of several hundred tons
capacity for neem seed processing and are producing and selling formulated oil, EC
formulations of alcoholic extract since 1998. Trials and demonstration fields were set up to
test and demonstrate the efficacy of the products to the farmers.
Main target crops were cotton and vegetables.

SRI LANKA
About 1 million neem trees, a lot of them growing “wild”, are forming the base of neem use in
Sri Lanka. Similar to India neem is traditionally used in various fields, mainly as a medicine
for human beings but als for animals, even the flowers are used for perfume. Despite the
wide abundance of the tree and the awareness for its medicinal properties its application as
a pesticide is not very common, but have received massive governmental assistance in recent
years.

In depth investigations by Dr. Kudagamage including a economical evaluations of neem
water extracts for controlling pests of vegetables revealed that neem is compatible with
commercial pesticides.
The use of neem for pest control has been promoted by TV spots and via the governmental
extension services as well as on demonstration plots.
Uni Peradeniya
The Forestry Institute of the famous University of Peradeniya (near Kandy) is part of the FAO
Forestry network and is conducting research on forestry aspects of neem. Results are
published by GUNASENA & MARAMBE (1998) (see below).
Ceylon Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research – CISIR
Basic analytical research on neem extracts has been carried out at CISIR. Alcoholic neem
extracts for pest control have been also produced for a private vegetables growing and exporting
entrepreneurs on request.
