MADAGASCAR
The neem tree is abundant in numbers of approx. 1 million trees in the dry southern areas
near towns and in villages in the south but also in some areas in the western part and
northern part of the island.

This project was assisting investigations on the abundance, traditional use and potential use
of neem and Chinaberry Melia azedarach (as well as other home-made pesticides) as
pesticides on farmer level in co-operation with research institutions, extension services and
NGOs.
Students carried out trials and economical studies on the traditional use of neem, use of
neem extracts for plant protection purposes in various crops and against various pests. The
results were presented on a seminar in July 1998 and are supposed to be published in the
proceedings in 2000.
VOARISOA Project - GTZ, Helvetas
The VAORISOA project is a common project of Swiss and German Development Organisations
with the aim to address the problems in the field of applying and use of dangerous
substances in Madagascar.
VAORISOA in cooperation with “Silo National des Graines Forestieres” (SNGF) compiled an
“Inventaire des Pesticides Naturels d’origine végétale a Madagascar” which is listing neem
beside 450 other plants. In addition VAORISOA assisted NGOs which are promoting plantderived
pesticides.
INDOSUMA Ltd; Tuléar
Occasionally INDOSUMA is collecting and processing small quantities of neem oil which is
exported or used for trials e.g. against locusts. The oil is also used to protect cotton seeds
The neem activities are irregular and dependent on the demand for the products.
