German artist Nina Schipoff describes below this year’s Ecuries
de Chateau group exhibit in Samoëns, France.
Samoëns, a charming little town of 2,300 inhabitants, is a very
popular hiking and skiing destination situated in the French alps.
It has a strong tradition of stone cutting, sculpture and art in general.
As an artist and a curator I invited 14 international artists
from Asia and Europe to express their different art visions in a
former stable in rural France.
My first approach was highly intuitive. I took the time to place,
move, displace and replace the art pieces in the exhibition venue
until I could feel a general communicative flow of these various
“art-worlds” and “art-visions” being established.
Once the narration had been initiated, I challenged my own
choices with a critical analysis. I considered the formal aspects
of the accrochage and its subject content. I questioned the overall
lines of perspective throughout the exhibition site, the rhythm
of the hangings, the respect of the individuality of each art piece,
the valuation in its specific spot. I scrutinized my coherent approach
to the topic and its accessibility to the public.
And only when the visual and intellectual journey from visitors’
point of view seemed compelling, I was finally satisfied.
