ask <strong>the</strong> Pope <strong>to</strong> summon one; that, meanwhile, till a<br />

General Council should meet, it was <strong>the</strong>ir duty <strong>to</strong><br />

acquiesce in <strong>the</strong> ecclesiastical settlement which had<br />

been made at <strong>Worms</strong>; that at that <strong>Diet</strong> all <strong>the</strong><br />

matters which <strong>the</strong>y proposed <strong>to</strong> bring again in<strong>to</strong><br />

discussion at Spires had been determined, and that<br />

<strong>to</strong> meet <strong>to</strong> discuss <strong>the</strong>m over again was <strong>to</strong> unsettle<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. In fine, he reminded <strong>the</strong>m <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Edict <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Worms</strong> against Lu<strong>the</strong>r, and called on <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> put it<br />

in execution. He forbade <strong>the</strong> meeting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Diet</strong> at<br />

Spires, under penalty <strong>of</strong> high treason and ban <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Empire. The princes eventually submitted, and thus<br />

<strong>the</strong> projected <strong>Diet</strong>, which had excited so great<br />

hopes on <strong>the</strong> one side and so great alarm on <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r, never met.<br />

The issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> affair was that <strong>the</strong> unity <strong>of</strong><br />

Germany was broken. <strong>From</strong> this hour, <strong>the</strong>re were a<br />

Catholic <strong>Diet</strong> and a Protestant <strong>Diet</strong> in <strong>the</strong> Empire–<br />

a Catholic Germany and a Protestant Germany.<br />
