strongly in <strong>the</strong> Reformed direction; and <strong>the</strong> public<br />

feeling, so unequivocally declared, reacted on <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Diet</strong>.<br />

The Reformed princes and <strong>the</strong>ir friends were<br />

never seen at mass; and on <strong>the</strong> Church's fast-days,<br />

as on o<strong>the</strong>r days, meat appeared at <strong>the</strong>ir tables.<br />

Perhaps <strong>the</strong>y were a little <strong>to</strong>o ostentatious in letting<br />

it be known that <strong>the</strong>y gave no obedience <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

ordinance od "Forbidden meats." It was not<br />

necessary on "magro day, as <strong>the</strong> Italians call it, <strong>to</strong><br />

carry smoking joints <strong>to</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>ran tables in full sight<br />

<strong>of</strong> Romanist assemblies engaged in <strong>the</strong>ir devotions,<br />

in order <strong>to</strong> show <strong>the</strong>ir Protestantism. They <strong>to</strong>ok<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r and more commendable methods <strong>to</strong><br />

distinguish between <strong>the</strong>mselves and <strong>the</strong> adherents<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old creed. They strictly charged <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

attendants <strong>to</strong> an orderly and obliging behavior; <strong>the</strong>y<br />

commanded <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> eschew taverns and gamingtables,<br />

and generally <strong>to</strong> keep alo<strong>of</strong> from <strong>the</strong><br />

roystering and disorderly company which <strong>the</strong> <strong>Diet</strong>s<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Empire commonly drew in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> cities where<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were held. Their preachers proclaimed <strong>the</strong><br />
