Reformation. Leaving a letter behind him <strong>to</strong><br />

explain his departure <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> council, he set out, and<br />

reached Basle in five days.<br />

Embarking at this point on <strong>the</strong> Rhine, in<br />

company <strong>of</strong> Ecolampadius, he descended <strong>the</strong> river<br />

<strong>to</strong> Strasburg. Here <strong>the</strong> travelers lodged a night in<br />

<strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> Mat<strong>the</strong>w Zell, <strong>the</strong> ca<strong>the</strong>dral preacher.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> morrow <strong>the</strong>y again set out, and taking <strong>the</strong><br />

most unfrequented paths, escorted by a troop <strong>of</strong><br />

Hessian cavalry, <strong>the</strong>y at length on <strong>the</strong> 29th<br />

September reached Marburg.<br />

The Wittenbergers had not yet arrived; <strong>the</strong>y<br />

appeared at Marburg <strong>the</strong> next day. With Lu<strong>the</strong>r<br />

came Melancthon, Jonas, and Cruciger; Zwingli<br />

was accompianied by Ecolampadius from Basle,<br />

Bucer and Hedio from Strasburg, and Osiander<br />

from Nuremberg. The landgrave lodged <strong>the</strong>m in his<br />

castle, an ancient fortress standing on <strong>the</strong> brow <strong>of</strong> a<br />

hill, and commanding a noble view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> valley <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Lahn. He made <strong>the</strong>m sit <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r at table, and<br />
