<strong>to</strong> beard <strong>the</strong> lion in his den. To <strong>the</strong> amazement <strong>of</strong><br />

every one, <strong>the</strong> elec<strong>to</strong>r was <strong>the</strong> first <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> princes<br />

<strong>to</strong> appear on <strong>the</strong> scene.<br />

Soon <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r princes, Popish and Protestant,<br />

began <strong>to</strong> arrive. Their entrance in<strong>to</strong> <strong>Augsburg</strong> was<br />

with no little pomp. They came attended by <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

retainers, whose numbers and equipments were on<br />

a scale that corresponded with <strong>the</strong> power and<br />

wealth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lord <strong>the</strong>y followed. Clad in armor,<br />

bearing banners blazoned with devices, and<br />

proclaiming <strong>the</strong>ir approach with sound <strong>of</strong> drum and<br />

clarion, <strong>the</strong>y looked more like men mustering for<br />

battle than assembling for <strong>the</strong> settlement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

creed <strong>of</strong> Christendom, <strong>the</strong> object specified in <strong>the</strong><br />

Emperor's summons. But in those days no<br />

discussion, even on religious questions, was<br />

thought <strong>to</strong> have much weight unless it was<br />

conducted amid <strong>the</strong> symbols <strong>of</strong> authority and <strong>the</strong><br />

blaze <strong>of</strong> power. On <strong>the</strong> 12th <strong>of</strong> May <strong>the</strong> Landgrave<br />

<strong>of</strong> Hesse entered <strong>Augsburg</strong>, accompanied by 120<br />

horsemen. And three days <strong>the</strong>reafter <strong>the</strong> deputies <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> good <strong>to</strong>wn <strong>of</strong> Nuremberg arrived <strong>to</strong> take part in<br />
