terested in what we do." And then he goes on to say -- and you can all relate to this whether you are from a large department or a small one -- "A couple of weeks ago I stood outside a burning apartment in Roxbury and watched, the trucks come up the street. I’m always amazed when I see these men and women, flags flying from the apparatus, the bastion of American patriotism. They rush unh~sitantly into smoke-filled darkness after complete strangers. The firefighters were white and black and brown. They live in different backgrounds and yet move as one fluid machine to help people, to save lives and protect the property of those they’ve never met. "I tell you this today," says Mike Barnicle, "I’ve seen more honor, more pride, more commitment and more compassion in firehouses and police stations throughout the country than I ever witnessed in our great universities, our large banks, our big businesses, City Hail, the State House or the halls of Congress. And yet, we cannot even place a small plaque on the sidewalk." Now, here’s a very interesting paragraph. "Because it not only tells us what people think of the fire service many times, but it also bespeaks the problems confronting us as a nation. We have seen the trouble in Los Angeles but there is a constant riot of money and greed that goes on every day in this city, Boston, and every other city in the country where spirit is looted and pride is diminished, all in the shadows of indifference." Think about it. And what he says about Boston could be said about any place in the fire service. Think about it. What kind of atmosphere do we have where nine public servants who gave their lives cannot be remembered, simply because a handful are concerned about appearances and the contour of the sidewalk. "All it was going to be was a littl~ plaque rimmed by bricks," said Mikey Mullane, Regional Vice President of the Boston Firefighters, "you know, something like the stars on Hollywood Boulevard." But Kilduff said, "We ain’t no stars to these people." There it is. What more can we say except what was said in the scripture. Maybe the people in Boston don’t want to hear it. Maybe the people in this country don’t want to hear it. But the fire service is a noble tradition and the words of Revelation apply to us as well as they do to maybody because we stand for loyalty to duty and compassion and service to others. 17
